The redevelopment of the former Molson brewery site in the Ville-Marie borough into a new mixed-use district creates an opportunity to weave over half a kilometer of St. Lawrence riverfront into the city fabric and showcases a brewing heritage unique to Montreal.
The plan comprises varying typologies of streets and public spaces that bring vibrancy and connectivity to this new district. These include a river promenade, lively commercial corridor, residential courtyards, shared streets, and pedestrian passageways.
The site is bordered on the East by îlot des Voltigeurs heritage block — the iconic heart of the former industrial complex — with its historic buildings and the landmark illuminated sign and clock on the Molson Tower. The district’s structural axis, de la Commune Street, unfolds as a generous, tree-lined pedestrian promenade, extending from de la Visitation Street to Alexandre Desève Alley, parallel to the river. At Sohmer Park, the promenade and park unite to recall the historic, once vibrant Terrasse Sohmer. As an iconic green space and true heart of the neighborhood, the park will renew the festive spirit of the old park, which was renowned for its music, performances, and popular attractions, and will offer a place for socializing, enjoyment, and play. A central opening in the canopy draws the eye toward the park’s central clearing and reveals sweeping panorama of the river, Île Sainte-Hélène, and the Jacques-Cartier Bridge beyond.
